A Big Budget Basher: Unboxing GP Toys Foxx S911 [Video]

By: Tim Gluth

Can a radio-controlled car that costs less than $30 pack as much fun and speed as other big-names on the market? That's what I asked myself before I tore open the packaging of the GT Toys Foxx S911 1/12 scale ready-to-run (RTR) monster truck. GearBest.com was kind enough to  send me a review vehicle to take a look at, shake down, and share my thoughts on. If you may be leery of R/C cars that cost considerably less than many of the brands you'll find at your local hobby shop (LHS), you're not alone. I'm always on the hunt for a great buy, but am also focused on getting a quality piece of machinery.  Some low-cost R/C vehicles don't live up to everything they try to deliver, but you will find a decent surprise every now and then.

Managing expectations

At less than $30, this is a decent 1/12 scale truck with a 2.4GHz radio system that looks to bring all of the fun that it can, and I hope to find out how much fun I can wring out of it.  Having said that, I've tempered my expectations as far as what the vehicle will do, how much it can be upgraded, and how fun it is, overall.  As I've said before, I have never experienced an R/C vehicle that wasn't fun. That said, no one model is perfect, so a potential "back yard basher" that comes in at under $30 seems like an appealing prospect.

Initial thoughts out of the box

As a small appetizer to my yet-to-be-written "full review" of the GT Toys Foxx S911 1/12 Monster Truck, here are a few of my thoughts on this vehicle, both straight out of the box and after a small bashing session.

  • The power adapter isn't of the best quality.  While it works, I had to come up with a system to hold the U.S. wall adapter dongle onto the power adapter itself (which ships as a default European connector).
  • This is a lightweight truck that floats over grass and likes to catch air on even the smallest of bumps and jumps.
  • It can move. If the tires were made of a stickier compound, this might be a non-stop wheelie machine.  The biggest surprise for me might be the amount of power and stock speed this truck possesses right out of the box.
  • The transmitter feels better in your hand than it looks and features a steering trim adjustment knob.

I'm looking forward to putting more time in with this vehicle soon and have been very happy with what I've seen from it to this point. If you're interested in a low-dollar radio-controlled car that brings a surprising amount of fun to the table, check out the GT Toys Foxx S911 1/12 Monster Truck at GearBest.com.
